The Little Shelf was created to give independent Scottish and Irish writers a place on a real bookshop shelf. The Giving Shelf takes that idea one step further: using the generosity of those writers to support good causes.
Every author with a title accepted for stocking donates one additional copy of each accepted title to The Giving Shelf. That copy is sold for charity, separately from the author's ordinary sale-or-return stock.
One extra copy of every accepted title is donated outright.
That book is offered for sale on The Giving Shelf.
100% of the selling price goes to our nominated charity.
Every penny of the book price.
The Little Shelf takes no commission on Giving Shelf copies. We cover the card-processing fees ourselves, so the full selling price is set aside for charity.
For example, if a donated book sells for £12, £12 is allocated to the nominated charity. This is separate from the usual sale-or-return agreement for the author's other copies.
Our first nominated charity: To be announced. We'll identify the charity and explain how the proceeds will be passed on before the charity shelf begins trading.
Chosen together, as we grow.
We'll start by selecting the causes ourselves. In time, we'd love our authors and readers to nominate and help choose charities, including local food banks, children's organisations, mental health services and other community causes.
We plan to support one nominated charity at a time, review the choice roughly every three months, and share updates on the amounts raised and donated. The schedule may evolve as our little community grows.
Every donation and charity sale will be recorded separately. We'll share clear updates, not vague promises.
